Trunk-or-treats
Trunk-or-treats, where families hand out candy from decorated car trunks in a parking lot, are run across Memphis by churches, schools, community groups and public agencies. Most are free and post their dates in October.
- Juvenile Court of Memphis and Shelby County: its 5th annual Candy Coated Trunk or Treat Festival ran Saturday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 616 Adams Ave., on the Washington Avenue side of the court, with the Chief Clarence Cash Foundation Jr. Firefighter Foundation. It is free, with trunk-or-treat, face painting, a firefighter simulator, a bounce house and a petting zoo, and coats and other essentials for families in need. That event has passed.

Safety on the night
From the FDA’s Halloween food safety advice:
- Eat first. Give children a light meal or snack before they go out, and have them wait until they get home to eat their candy.
- Wrapped treats only. Tell children not to eat anything that is not commercially wrapped, and check wrappers for tears, pinholes or odd colors.
Other steps:
- Look up registered sex offenders near your route on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s sex offender registry.
- Report a dark streetlight on your route to 311 before the night.
- Carry a flashlight and choose costumes that let children see and be seen.
